Douglas MacGregor Maconochie

Douglas MacGregor Maconochie, age 84, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 13, 2015 at Brookdale Assisted Living in Buford, GA, where he had been living for the past year. He was born June 26, 1930, in Detroit, Michigan to Thomas Anderson and Isabella (MacGregor) Maconochie. Doug was the youngest of five children. Doug married the love of his life, Betty Mae Swindell on June 24, 1950. They spent 63 and a half loving years together. In the early 1950's, Douglas was drafted into the U.S. Army serving in the Korean War. He drove supply and ammunition trucks for the troops and at the end of the war drove the released American POW troops back to our planes for transport home. After being honorably discharged, Doug spent many years as a loyal, hardworking employee of Mechanic's Laundry, serving the "Big Three" Detroit auto companies and surrounding businesses. He retired in 1992. Doug enjoyed cheering for the Detroit Tigers, Detroit Lions but the Detroit Red Wings were his favorite, especially the "Production Line" of Gordie Howe, Ted Lindsay and Sid Abel in their "hey day". Doug and Betty loved being together and enjoyed many friendships and family ties in the Warren and Fraser, Michigan area. They were generous people, thoughtful neighbors, active in their church and volunteered in the community. In 2005, they moved to Buford, GA to be closer to their two grandsons and actively support them at their activities. They were both very thankful to be a part of their lives and extremely proud to be their grandparents. Above all, Doug was a very kind man. He loved animals, music and dancing, a bright blue sky, driving, and he loved food. He always had a big hug, smile, and warm thing to say. He was loving, generous, devoted and held his family and friends close to his heart. He will be deeply missed. Douglas is survived by his daughter Sandra Maconochie and partner Mandi (Lynn) Sandmann of Ann Arbor, MI; his son, Scott and Michelle Maconochie and grandsons Grayson Maconochie and Harrison Maconochie of Suwanee, GA; brothers Ted (Roberta) Maconochie and Tom (Arlene) Maconochie as well as many other loving family members and friends Doug was preceded in death by his wife, Betty; his parents; his sister Jessie Osborne and brother Stewart Maconochie.
