Myra Lakes-Powell

Myra Lakes-Powell, affectionately known to those who loved her as "Peaches," passed away peacefully in her sleep on Sunday, August 2nd. Surrounded by the memory of a life well-lived and deeply loved, she leaves behind a legacy of strength, faith, and unwavering devotion to her family. Myra was born on July 17, 1949, and grew up in Southwest Atlanta, where she graduated from Price High School in 1968. It was around this time that she met and fell in love with Lewis James Powell. From their union came her greatest joy and her one and only child, Miranda Mechell Millions. For more than 30 years, Myra dedicated herself to her work as a Unit Clerk at Emory Hospital, a career defined by diligence, reliability, and quiet pride, until her retirement in 2008. Those who worked alongside her knew her as steady, hardworking, and someone who truly cared about the people around her. In retirement, Myra savored the simple pleasures of life. She spent countless hours enjoying her favorite old westerns and classic mysteries — Matlock, Perry Mason, and Columbo were always playing in her home. A cold Diet Coke and a treat of Bit-O-Honey or Skittles were the small joys that never failed to bring a smile to her face, especially when they came from her daughter, Miranda, who took great delight in keeping her mother's favorite treats close at hand. Above all else, Myra's greatest love was her daughter. Theirs was a bond that words can hardly capture. When asked what her mother meant to her, Miranda simply said, "She was my everything." That single sentence holds within it a lifetime of shared laughter, quiet strength, and unconditional love between a mother and her only child. Myra lived out her values every single day. She showed Miranda the meaning of hard work, the importance of staying grounded, and what it looks like to be self-sufficient and fulfilled — not just in the world, but in one's walk with God. She was a woman of deep faith, and she made sure that the value of worshiping and trusting in God was woven into the very fabric of her daughter's life. It is a gift that will continue to guide Miranda for the rest of her days. Myra was preceded in death by her mother, Minnie Bell Lakes; her siblings, Alvin and Calvin Lakes (twins), Lonnie Carl Lakes, Vickie Armstrong, Renee Lakes, and Leon Lakes; and her beloved grandson, Chandler Smith-Millions. She leaves to cherish her memory her one and only daughter, Miranda Mechell Millions; her grandson, Quvardas "Que" Millions; and her great-grandbaby, Emery Smith-Millions. Though she is no longer with us, the love, faith, and wisdom Myra Lakes-Powell poured into her family will live on in every life she touched. Rest peacefully, Peaches. Your everything loved you back. A Memorial Service will be held in the Chapel of Flanigan Funeral Home on Sunday, August 9, 2026 at 1:00 p.m. with Brother Kelvin Brown officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday, August 9, 2026 from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m.
