Richard "Dick" Bechtel Schaeffer

Richard Betchel Schaeffer (Dick), a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully at home on August 6, 2026. Born on March 24, 1939, in Oakland, California, Dick's life was a testament to love, service, and dedication. He was the cherished son of James Arthur Schaeffer and Charlotte "Toddy" Thompson, who predeceased him. Dick grew up in Oakland and pursued his education at Long Beach City College. His commitment to service led him to join the US Air Force, where he served with distinction for four years, achieving the rank of Sergeant. Stationed in Guam and Fairbanks, Alaska, Dick was a Crew Chief over B-47 aircraft, a role he performed with great pride and skill. In his professional life, Dick was a dedicated and accomplished manufacturing engineer. He spent 16 years with Douglas Aircraft Company in Long Beach, California before relocating to Nashville, Tennessee to work for Aero Structures. His career saw him take on significant leadership roles, including serving as Vice President for Aero Structures and as President of Aero Tech Company in Wichita, Kansas. Dick also held a position at FATS in Atlanta, Georgia, and concluded his distinguished career as President of Albert International in Gainesville, Georgia, retiring in 2004. Beyond his professional achievements, Dick's life was marked by his deep devotion to family. He shared 39 wonderful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Barbara Blackwell Schaeffer. Together, they built a family filled with love and joy, including their children, Richard Betchel Schaeffer, Jr. (Katie) of Arroyo Grande, CA, Trina Louise Ansdell (Allan) of Huntington Beach, CA. Michael Warren Morris (Melody) of Clarksville, TN, Steven Gregory Morris of Fort Smith, Arkansas, and James B. Morris (Christy) of Braselton, GA. Dick was a proud grandfather to 13 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren, who were the light of his life. He is also survived by his brother, Robert Michael Schaeffer of Huntington Beach, CA, and many other special extended family members. Dick was known for his strong handshake and gentle spirit. He had an extraordinary gift for making everyone feel welcome and valued, and his kindness and generosity left a lasting impact on all who knew him. A man of deep faith, Dick was an active member of Christ Place Church in Flowery Branch, Georgia, since 2008, where he formed many cherished friendships and contributed to his community. A memorial will be held later to honor Dick's life, reflecting the love and respect he garnered from all who knew him. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to Christ Place Church, Flowery Branch, Georgia, in memory of Dick's enduring legacy of faith and service.
