April 6, 1936 - September 12, 2021
Albert Vehar, 85, of Flowery Branch, GA, passed away on September 12, 2021. Al was born on April 6, 1936, in the small town of Imperial, PA. Upon graduating from high school, he enlisted in the Air Force in 1954 and served honorably until his discharge in 1958. He achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant and held dear that he lived in and served the greatest nation under God. Prior to enlisting in the Air Force in 1952, at the young age of 16, Al began what would become a career that spanned more than 40 years with United Airlines and Covia, retiring in 1993. He attended the University of Pittsburgh and further developed his natural gift for teaching, from radar instruction in the service, to reservations personnel at United, and as a safe driving instructor in recent years for AARP. Al married the love of his life, Sally Howell, in 1955 and had two children, Judi Bennett and Mark Vehar. Al and Sally were married for 66 years. They were each other’s best friend and soul mate. Together they built a legacy of family, faith, and love that extended to their grandchildren, Nick Fisher and Lauren Fisher, and great grandchildren, Micha King and Charlie King. He loved his family with every ounce of his being. Al was everyone’s dad, as he particularly loved and had a special connection with children. He never met a stranger and would tell cherished stories of his life that spoke of who he was. Al was a child of God and Jesus Christ. He was an active member of his church, Level Creek United Methodist, and loved his church family. A highlight for him was his reading of the Polar Express each Christmas to the pre-school children, who referred to him affectionately as “Mr. Owl.” Al is survived by his wife, Sally, children Judi Bennett and Mark Vehar, grandchildren Nick Fisher and Lauren Fisher, and great grandchildren Micha King and Charlie King. Al is also survived by his sister-in-law, Julie Fritz and preceded in death by his brother, Clarence Fritz. In lieu of flowers, his family requests donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital in Al’s memory. Services will be held Sunday, September 26th at 2 PM at Level Creek United Methodist Church, 4844 Suwanee Dam Road, Suwanee, GA 30024.
