Roy Edward Scribner of Buford passed away peacefully on April 27, 2016 at the age of 90. Roy was born on March 25, 1926 in Webb City, Oklahoma to William John and Ethel Mae (Odell) Scribner. After completing most of his secondary education in Drumright, Oklahoma, Roy earned his final high school diploma from the Los Angeles City High School District in 1946 after serving in the U.S. Navy. In early 1944 at the age of 17, having written permission from his parents, Roy entered the U.S. Navy to serve in World War II. He served as a radioman on the U.S.S. Dorsey, a Destroyer/Minesweeper, and saw action and/or swept mines in the battles of Leyte Gulf, Tinian, Guam, Iwo Jima and Okinawa. In January 1946, Roy was Honorably Discharged having attained the rank of Radioman Third Class. On July 8, 1949, Roy married Norma Lee Myrick of Cushing, Oklahoma. During this time he was working on earning a bachelor's degree from Oklahoma Agricultural and Mechanical College, now known as Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, Oklahoma, eventually graduating in 1951 with a Bachelor of Science in Commerce. From there, Roy's education led him to a career in the oil business, beginning with Magnolia Oil Company in Vanderbilt, Texas and Duncan, Oklahoma, and then on to the Mobil Oil Company in Oklahoma City. In the fall of 1966, the family, now consisting of three daughters, was moved by Mobil Oil to Tripoli, Libya, where their lives were enhanced by the adventure of travel and new experiences. During the Arab-Israeli 6 Day June War of 1967, the family minus Roy experienced being evacuated by the U.S.A.F. through Wheelus AFB, then located just outside of Tripoli. Roy stayed behind with others to make sure the Mobil families made it out of Tripoli. In 1969, with the overthrowing of King Idris of Libya by Gaddafi, it was necessary to move the family back to Oklahoma City (Moore) with Mobil Oil. In 1975, Roy accepted a position with Mobil in Anchorage, Alaska to work in connection with the Alaskan pipeline. Three years later, he and Norma move to Denver for a couple of years work with Mobil and then back to Ada and Mustang, Oklahoma where he finished out his career with Mobil in 1984. In retirement Roy and Norma moved to Lillian, Alabama to be near their oldest daughter and eventually to Buford to be near their second daughter. After the passing of Norma in 1997, Roy married Gail Jones in 1999 and then began a second career as a bus monitor for handicapped children for the Gwinnett County School System. He remained in that job until a stroke required his termination in the fall of 2013. Roy was known by his family and friends as a friendly, giving man, a stranger to no one, and strong in his Christian faith - a whistler that you could always locate in any store! He will be sorely missed by all who knew him - a blessing to all he touched. Roy is predeceased by his wife, Norma, his parents, all his brothers and sisters - Virgil, Raymond, Clifford, Goldie, Opal, Leon, Bill, Betty and Dorothy - and his grandson, Bradley Burton.
