Jonathan (Jon) Edward Thomaston

Jon Thomaston, 73 of Lawrenceville GA passed away on July 12 from complications after a head trauma. He retired from the grocery business, having worked over 55 years in the metro Atlanta area for many stores including Winn-Dixie, Food Giant, Big Star, A&P, Metro Produce, Ingles and Kroger. He is survived by his wife, Marjorie Thomaston, to whom he had been married for more than 48 years. He was predeceased by his son, Steven Thomaston. Other surviving relatives include his sister, Carol Arnold (husband Patrick), his brothers in law, Lee Gramling (wife Dianne), Joe Gramling, and Kevin Chatham (wife Sherry,) as well as, nieces Laura Fawzi (husband Amin) Melissa Meares (husband Kyle) and nephews Michael Chatham (wife Dayana) and Corey Chatham. Jon was born in Macon, GA but grew up in Dekalb county and graduated from Walker HS. From an early age he was active in scouting, rising in rank from Cub scout to Eagle Scout. He was active in scouts for 60+ years and as an adult served as a Unit commissioner, cub scout leader, assistant Scout leader, Scout leader and liaison between the church and troop as the Chartered Organization representative. In the BSA Atlanta Area Counsel he was active in Wood Badge Owl Patrol and Order of the Arrow. His Scouting accolades and awards included: Arrow Of Light, Duty to God, Cross and Flame, Webelos Den Leader training award, Den Leader training award, Scoutmaster training award, Scoutmaster Key, and BSA Alumni. In addition to being active in scouts, Jon was active in his community through Optimist International, and his local UMC. At Dacula UMC, where he has been a member for more than 26 years, he participated in many group Bible studies including all of the Disciple Bible studies as well as the Men's Bible study group. He was a Stephen’s minister and was always quick to help out with Wednesday night dinners. After retiring Jon found that he could put his experience in the grocery business to good use by volunteering at the local food pantry, The Lawrenceville Co-op. Starting just after he retired, he became a regular volunteer on a daily basis helping to sort food or assisting in training new volunteers. He was happiest when he was helping others and was quick to share encouragement and a joke to brighten up a day. Jon lived his faith. He was a people person wanting to take the time to chat with everyone. His memorial service will be held on July 26 at Dacula UMC, 2655 Fence Rd.
