Ruby Nell Mitchell Johnson

Ruby Nell Mitchell Johnson, age 76, of Decatur, GA, passed away on Sunday, March 24, 2024. Ruby Nell Mitchell Johnson was born in Atlanta, Georgia on December 8th, 1947, to the late Mary Cook Mitchell and the late Robert Lee Mitchell. She transitioned to Glory Land on March 24, 2024(Palm Sunday). Ruby, fondly known as “Nell”, attended public schools in Atlanta. She graduated 4th in her class from David T. Howard High School in 1965. Ruby received her Bachelor of Science and Master of Arts degrees from Clark Atlanta University. It was at Clark Atlanta University that Nell earned her” Pearls” and became a lifelong dedicated member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority (1968). Years later, Ruby continued her education at Geogia State University and received her Ed.S degree in Educational Administration. Ruby loved to travel and experience life to the fulness. Her favorite memory was visiting the Boy’s Orphanage in Italy. Before she fell ill, she was able to visit Alaska, Hawaii, parts of Europe and Australia. Ruby was also a dedicated Eastern Star of Trinity Chapter #2 OES Nora L. Smith Grand Chapter. She was willing to serve and render civic and community support for her Chapter’s initiatives. Ruby was a dedicated teacher and administrator. She was known for her helpful and nurturing ways for her students, peers, and co-workers. Her classy and professional demeanor would make a mark on everyone who entered her presence. Ruby retired as Assistant Principal at Fredrick Douglass High School with the Atlanta Public School System. After retirement from APS, Ruby opened her own Auto Insurance company and worked as a Realtor for Metro Brokers. Ruby committed her life to Christ at an early age. She was always willing to serve those in need of food, shelter, or clothing. She was a firm member of the New Birth Missionary Baptist Church, where she served in the choir and on the usher board. When her health limited her ability to attend church in person, she watched the services from home and continued to pray for her New Birth family. Next to Christ, Ruby’s family was most important to her. She was the true matriarch to the Mitchell family and a strong support system for her daughter Tia’s family. She adored her Son-in-law, Ben, and no one could bring more joy to her heart than her grandchildren, Chris, and Rachel. A day would not pass without Ruby speaking to Tia and her grandchildren. She was known for her wise advice and being an avid cheerleader for her loved one’s accomplishments. Singing and dancing with her “kids” was a favorite of hers. Finally, she gladly served as caretaker to her sisters and mom until they were called home to be with God. Ruby was preceded by in death by her two beloved sisters: Ms. Bettye “BJ” Mitchell, Sandra Mitchell Patillo and nephew, Carrick “Ricky” Dubose. Ruby’s fun memories will be forever cherished by her bestie and daughter, Tia (Benjamin) Lemon, two grandchildren: Benjamin “Chris” Lemon, Rachel Sydney Lemon; God-Daughters: Candace Ingram and Cora (Michael) Wong; one surviving Sister; Ann Berta Mitchell; Nieces; Candace Ingram, Delene Mitchell, Maggie Jeter, Tammy Dixon and Jocelyn DuBose; Great nieces: Tyrah Crawford, Calyn DuBose, Ciara DuBose, Corri DuBose and Paityn Parks; treasured friend: Joe Butts and a host of other relatives, family and friends. A Graveside Service will be held on Tuesday, April 9, 2024 at 12:00 pm at Lincoln Cemetery Chapel, 2275 Joseph E Boone Blvd NW, Atlanta, GA 30314.
