Thomas Franklin Godwin May 23, 1941 – July 4, 2026 Thomas Franklin Godwin finally hung up his boots, folded away his Santa suit, after answering the call for one last sleigh ride. Born on May 23, 1941, in Cedartown, GA, Tommy spent his childhood growing up on a farm in Powder Springs alongside his parents and two brothers, John and Butch. Farm life taught him the value of hard work, common sense, and how to fix just about anything with enough determination and a few colorful words. Tommy never met a stranger. A natural salesman, he could strike up a conversation with anyone and somehow leave them smiling. His gift was connecting with people. When the Christmas season rolled around, Tommy became someone else entirely—or perhaps more himself than ever. As Santa Claus, he spread joy to countless children (and adults), proving that the real magic of Christmas isn't found at the North Pole, but in kindness, laughter, and a hearty "Ho, Ho, Ho." His love of service extended well beyond the holidays. Tommy was a dedicated member of the Boy Scouts of America, believing that character, preparedness, and helping others were values worth passing on. He also volunteered with the National Ski Patrol at both Sapphire Valley and Cataloochee Ski Area, where he spent years helping skiers who occasionally discovered that gravity is undefeated. Above all else, Tommy's greatest adventure was the life he shared with Marsha Godwin, the love of his life. Though she preceded him in death, there's comfort in imagining their reunion—probably beginning with her asking what took him so long. He leaves behind a family who will forever cherish his stories, humor, generosity, and unwavering love: his children, Patrick Godwin (Stephanie), Kevin Godwin (Kim), and Stacey Lewis (Matt); his grandchildren, Brett, Conner, Emily, Brady, Camden, Devin, and Katie; and his great-grandchildren, Beckham, Walker, and Margo. If Tommy had one wish, it probably wasn't for everyone to wear black or speak in hushed tones. Instead of mourning too heavily, honor Tommy by lending a helping hand, telling a good story, taking the scenic route, or simply making someone smile. Bonus points if you believe in Santa just a little bit longer. Rest easy, Tommy. The slopes are always freshly groomed, the campfire is warm, and Christmas is never far away. Tommy’s Celebration of Life will be Saturday July 18th, 2026 from 2:00pm-5:00pm at Rosati’s Pizza and Pub, 415 Peachtree Parkway, Suite 200, Cumming GA 30041. Feel free to wear something that shows your relationship with Tommy - Santa, Scouts, Ski Patrol. Stop by during this time to enjoy some food and drinks, as we gather to tell stories about Tommy and celebrate his life. A Red Hat ceremony for Santa to be held at 2:30pm.
